Winter:

A great time will be had by the children during our winter and bear unit.  For the winter unit the class will be making various projects such as snowflakes and snowmen.  The class will also be making edible snow and snow crystals.  During the bear unit the children will learn about the four types of bears that live in the Northern Hemisphere.  The class will also have a traveling bear.  Each night the traveling bear will spend a night with a child and the child will draw a picture to explain his or her adventure with the bear.  The drawings will be complied into a class book for the children to enjoy the various adventures that each child had.

Our theme for the month is also penguins.  The children will be learning about the 17 types of penguins.  We will be working on map skills and the ability to locate places on the globe or a map.   The children will also experience what it is like to be an emperor penguin and have to walk with an egg on their feet.  This is always a fun activity in the classroom as the plastic eggs roll over the place and the children use their critical thinking skills to figure out the best way to walk with the egg.

A great time will be had by the children during our dental health unit.  The class will be learning about the importance of good nutrition and proper dental health.  Some of the projects that we will be making are healthy food collages and smiling teeth with a matching toothbrush to help us to remember to brush our teeth twice a day.  We will also be learning about some animals that have teeth and how they take care of their teeth.

We will also be celebrating our love of friendship for Valentine’s Day.  The class will be making treat bags where the class can place their valentine’s for their friends.  A special craft is planned for the students.  We will be making teddy bear magnets that are holding a heart that remind the children how special they are with the message “You Are Beary Special”.  The special treat planned for the day is to make “Love Bug” Cookies.

Fall:

The fall is a busy time in the classroom.  We are all getting to know each other and adjust to the classroom.  We spend September getting to know each other and our families through our "All About Me" books.  The children create books that are displayed for the school to see that tells us about their family, friends, favorite food and toys.

During our Apple unit the children have the opportunity to try different types of apples and decide which apple is their favorite.  As part of the shared reading and writing program for the month, the children help to make a class book about their favorite apple.  The children also paint with apples and learn about the life cycle of an apple tree.

Each October the kindergarten class visits Lawrence Farms.  At the farm we are able to go apple and pumpkin picking, go on a hay ride and see what it is like to work on a farm.  The trip always has many memorable memories, especially the hay maze.  The fun part of the trip is always trying to carry around the very heavy pumpkins.

A yearly tradition for the class is to trick or treat over at the college for Halloween.  It is always a fun time parading around the college in costume.  The college professors also get into the spirit of Halloween and dress up in costumes for the children.

During the discussion of the fall the class goes on a nature walk around the college and collects fall leaves.  There are many different types of trees on the grounds of the college and the children usually find may leaves in the warm fall colors.
