Apostles - Men chosen by Jesus to share in his mission in a special way.

 

Church All those who believe in Jesus Christ, have been baptized in him, and follow his teachings.

 

Jesus’ mission - To share the life of God with all people and to save them from sin.

 

Kingdom of God - The power of God’s love active in our lives and in the world.

 

 

Baptism

Anointing with chrism is a sign of the Gift of the Holy Spirit.

 

Catechumenate is a period of formation for Christian initiation.

 

Chrism is perfumed oil blessed by the bishop.

 

Godparents are expected to be a Christian example and promise to support the child as he or she grows in faith.

 

Lighted candle symbolizes that Christ enlightens the newly baptized.

 

The celebrant traces the sign of the cross on the child’s forehead.

 

Water is an important sign in the sacrament of Baptism.

White garment placed on the newly baptized symbolizes the person’s new life in Christ.

 

 

 


Confirmation

An advocate is someone who intercedes on our behalf, speaks for us, or defends us.

 

 

At Confirmation, candidates stand and renew their Baptismal promises.

 

 

At Confirmation, the bishop invites everyone to pray for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on those being confirmed.

 

 

Confirmation leads us from Baptism to the Eucharist and full initiation in Church.

 

 

Fruits of the Holy Spirit - love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

 

 

Gifts of the Holy Spirit - wisdom, understanding, right judgment, courage, knowledge,

reverence, and wonder and awe.

 

 

In the celebration of Confirmation, we gather with our parish community and express or belief in Jesus.

 

 

When the candidates are anointed with the laying on of hands, they are marked as people who fully share in Jesus’ mission.

 


Eucharist

At the Last Supper, Jesus told his apostles to “do this in memory of me.”

 

 

In the Eucharist, the Body and Blood of Christ are present under the appearances of bread and wine.

 

 

In the sacrament of Eucharist, the grace received in Baptism grows in us.

 

 

Jesus acts through the priest during the celebration of the Eucharist.

 

 

Jesus wanted his followers to know that belief in him is needed to have life with God.
