Civil War Generals

Eighth Grade Social Studies students will become experts on a Civil War Generals.  Working in teams of two, students will use Internet resources to gather information about their chosen General and create a PowerPoint presentation. Students will present the slideshow they create to the class.

Choose one of the following Generals:

  • W. T. Sherman
  • George Gordon Meade
  • George Armstrong Custer
  • Stonewall Jackson
  • George Pickett
  • Jeb Stuart
  • James Longstreet
  • Isaac Trimble
  • Robert E. Lee
  • Ulysses S. Grant

Include words and pictures on each slide.  You may also include sounds if you wish.  Your presentation should have at least nine slides, as follows:

1. Title page (include the names of your team members)

2. Introduce your General. Where was he born? What was his early life like?

3. Was he Union or Confederate? Why?

4. Create a timeline of important battles for this general.

5. What were his greatest achievements?

6. What did his men think of him? What about soldiers on the other side?

7. What happened to him after the war?

8. Would you consider him to be a successful general? Why?

9. List all the Internet resources you used. Include all sources of pictures and maps, as well as facts. You will list your sources using MLA standards, as described on the Purdue Online Writing Lab at http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/557/09/.
